Physical Therapy Modalities for a Healthier, Pain-Free Life

A modality is a type of electrical, thermal, or mechanical energy that causes physiological changes. Dr. Foote incorporates a variety of physical therapy modalities to relieve pain, improve circulation, decrease swelling, reduce muscle spasms, and enhance overall recovery. These therapies are often used alongside other treatments to maximize their effectiveness.

Common Physical Therapy Modalities

Dr. Foote offers a range of physical therapy modalities designed to support rehabilitation and promote healing. Some of the most effective modalities include:

Ultrasound (US)

  • High-frequency sound waves that produce deep tissue heating

  • Provides relief from pain and muscle spasms

  • Enhances circulation

  • Relaxes tight muscles and soft tissue, preparing them for stretching

Electrical Stimulation

  • Uses different forms of electrical currents through surface electrodes to cause muscle contraction and relaxation

  • Relieves muscle spasms, pain, and swelling

  • Assists in muscle re-education and strengthening

Traction

  • Applies a longitudinal pull or distraction to spinal segments

  • Alleviates nerve irritation (radiculitis) and muscle spasms

  • Can be performed manually or with a machine

  • Cervical traction involves a neck halter, while lumbar traction uses a pelvic belt with the patient lying down

Transcutaneous Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

  • Uses low-voltage electrical current through surface electrodes to override pain sensations

  • Small, portable unit (slightly larger than a pager) worn throughout the day for pain management

  • Allows the patient to apply treatment as needed

Moist Heat (Hydrocollator)

  • Produces deeper heat compared to a dry heating pad

  • Increases circulation and reduces swelling

  • Relaxes muscles and soft tissue, preparing them for other treatments

Cold/Ice Therapy

  • Uses “ice packs” or “ice massage” for acute injuries and pain relief (both acute and chronic)

  • Reduces swelling, inflammation, and muscle spasms

Joint Mobilization

Much like the chiropractic adjustment, the goal of joint mobilization is to relieve pain, restore joint motion and improve overall function. However, unlike the adjustment, mobilizations are slow and gentle movements which take the joint or body part to end-range in oscillating motions.

Dr. Foote customizes treatment plans to each patient’s needs, integrating physical therapy modalities with chiropractic care for optimal healing. "My husband and I have visited numerous times, and we find Dr. Foote exceptionally kind. He remembers his patients, even if a year has passed since the last visit. I initially had a genuine fear of getting my neck adjusted, but Dr. Foote made me feel very comfortable and at ease. I have complete trust in him, and everyone else in the office is equally kind and professional."
